Even before the clock strikes 8:20 and the school day gets started, the FSHA campus is stirring with energy. Students cramming in the library right before a big test, faculty sipping coffee in their classrooms and out in the parking lot, 80s dance music playing as Tologs pull into their parking spots or get off the bus. The bearer of the boombox is the Hill’s own Mr. Ignacio Navarro, Campus Safety Officer, fondly known as Iggy. He began playing music in December, to get everyone into the Christmas spirit, and now does so every Monday and Friday.
“I want the school and everyone around me to be happy. I want to see everybody laughing, feeling good about themselves, feeling good about coming to school,” Iggy said.
He specifically plays music from the 1980s because of his fondness for the decade and the students’ reactions to the songs.
“The best music ever was from the 80s. Even the new generation, they hear this music, they understand it,” Iggy said.
Thanks to his playlist, Iggy’s hope for upbeat mornings on the Hill has been coming true.
“The girls come near the speaker, they dance to it, sing to it, hop to it… it’s really nice to see everybody happy,” Iggy said.
