Following a contentious midterm elections cycle, the Democratic Party has gained control of both the Senate and the House of Representatives. In addition to frustrations with the current administration’s erratic foreign policy, political analysts cite increased gas prices as a major driver of the backlash against Republicans.1 Democratic Socialists also increased in prominence this November, obtaining leadership positions in several battleground states including Michigan, Colorado and Pennsylvania.
Republicans’ electoral troubles began this February, when President Trump declared war on Iran. Although Trump claimed that the conflict would last four to six weeks at most, the war is now entering its ninth month, with no end in sight.2 Meanwhile, average gas prices in the United States have increased by almost 40% since the war began.3 For voters invested in Trump’s promises to end foreign conflicts and solve the affordability crisis, the Iran War was a rude awakening. In a post on X this Wednesday, Vice President J.D. Vance stated: “The reason [Republicans] lost [the midterm elections] is the war. The president himself said so last night.”
The president’s unpopularity created an opening for Democratic candidates who, recognizing voters’ concerns about affordability, campaigned primarily on pledges to bring down gas prices and end costly foreign conflicts. In Texas, James Talarico, who centered his campaign around taxing the rich and lowering healthcare costs, became the first Democrat to win a Texas senate seat since 1994.4 Similarly, Adam Hamilton flipped one of Kansas’s historically Republican senate positions with promises to end corporate price gouging and reduce taxes for the middle class.5 In a statement following his victory on Tuesday night, Hamilton said, “We made history… I’m going to do all I can to love boldly and help us as a nation love boldly, to serve joyfully, and to lead courageously.”6
Democratic Socialists also benefited from voters’ foreign policy grievances. In Colorado, Melat Kiros, a DSA member and an outspoken critic of the US’s alliance with Israel, became the first Gen Z woman elected to Congress.7 Other newly instated DSA representatives include Darializa Avila Chevalier and Claire Valdez in New York, Donovan McKinney in Michigan and Chris Rabb in Pennsylvania, all of whom have called for reduced US military aid to Israel.8
In addition to Kiros and Talerico, the midterms saw several other firsts. In Georgia, Keisha Lance Bottoms became the US’s first Black female governor. Michigan politician Abdul El-Sayed is now the senate’s first Muslim official. And in New Mexico and Minnesota, Deb Haaland and Peggy Flanagan are representing Native American women in Congress for the first time.9 Addressing supporters after her win, Flanagan said, “Let today be the start of a new American movement. It is a movement that is defined not by corporate greed or political hatred, but by the power of people coming together to demand change.”10
While Democrats celebrate the “blue wave” sweeping the nation, some Republicans have expressed dismay with the results of the midterm elections. In an interview with FOX News, President Trump said he “thought [the Republicans] would do better.” Nevertheless, Trump added that he was “absolutely willing” to accept the results of the midterm elections, saying his conservative cabinet will “probably work something out” to govern peacefully with the new Democratic-majority Congress.
