Kairos was more than just a four-day retreat from campus. For me and many in the Class of 2026, it became a series of moments that challenged me to reflect, connect, and step outside daily routines. From the excitement of leaving campus to the quiet moments of journaling and late-night conversations in the cabins, the experience unfolded in ways I could not have fully expected. Looking back, these five moments capture what made Kairos, in my opinion, truly unforgettable.
- The Excitement on the Road (Plus a trip to the beach)
The morning I left campus I could immediately feel a change in energy. Looking around, I saw packed bags, buses awaiting boarding, and friends joking around, which built up the excitement for the journey ahead. While the retreat team went ahead to set up the center, the buses made a quick stop in Oxnard Beach. Along the beach, I walked around with friends feeling the cold wind and taking in the ocean air and sound of waves. Even though the weather was chilly, the moment made the trip feel real and imminent, and the anticipation for what was ahead only grew stronger as the buses drove through the countryside.
- Cabin Life
Arriving at the retreat center meant settling into cabins with classmates I didn’t know very well. Those few days quickly turned the cabins into a space full of laughter, late-night conversations, and the small chaos that comes with living together. At one point, a wave of illnesses spread through the retreat, and some people had to leave early. Even with that challenge, the cabins became an opportunity of service. We took care of each other and Ms. Sam stepped in as the nurse to help, checking on everyone and making sure people were okay.
- Reflection and Journaling
One of the most meaningful parts of Kairos for me was the time set aside for reflection, known as rec time. During those moments, I had the chance to slow down and think without the distractions of everyday life. I spent time journaling, writing letters, and sometimes just sitting quietly. Those small pockets of calm helped me think more deeply about my life, my relationships, and what really matters to me.
- Heart-to-Heart Conversations
Some of the most memorable moments didn’t happen during planned activities but during simple conversations. I found myself talking with friends while walking back from a hike, sharing thoughts about college, life after high school, and hopes for the future. At other times, I would just laugh over inside jokes with friends. Those conversations helped me feel closer to my classmates and made the experience feel even more meaningful.
- Leaving with Memories and Lessons
By the final day, Kairos felt like its own small world. Over those four days, I shared moments with my classmates that made me laugh, reflect, and see people in new ways. When I left, I carried with me more than just memories. I left with a stronger sense of community, and a new perspective on myself and the people around me. It reminded me how powerful it can be to step away from routine and truly connect with others.
Kairos showed me that stepping away from everyday life, even if it was just for a short time, can lead to growth, deeper friendships, and memories that last far beyond the retreat itself.
