Here at Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy, school spirit is not something we take lightly. Whether we are winning against another school in a basketball game or accepting defeat in Dig Pink, the Tolog school spirit should persist. Although it is not easy to say this, I believe that the 2024-2025 school year has not been living up to this standard.
In the history of FSHA, students, teachers, and even staff members made being enthusiastic on the Hill a priority. Dig Pink during my freshman year in 2021-2022, in particular, is a perfect example of the typical Tolog spirit. Hearing the “mighty Tolog beat” and the loud chants echoing in the gym is a moment I’ll never forget. Everyone’s motivation to participate and compete with each other filled the gym with community and unity. The ‘24 Dig Pink event against Mayfield, however, was a loss not only on the volleyball court, but in energy. The bleachers were quiet and our classic Tolog chants went unheard.
From the first day that I stepped onto the Hill back in eighth grade, the pep rallies on the shadow day were spirited enough to catch my attention. I still remember former ASB vice president Cameron Bender’s ’23 booming cheers that set the tone for what kind of school we are. This was ultimately why choosing to attend FSHA was not a difficult decision for me.
What is school spirit? On the Hill, we recognize school spirit as being excited for school events, participating in spirit week, embracing FSHA’s unique traditions, and even engaging in competitions between grades. Tologs recognize our spirit on the Hill during Halloween festivities and even FIT Tolog awards.
To combat the absence of our loud cheering and traditional FSHA spirit, I have compiled a list of ways we can bring this enthusiasm back to the Hill.
- Dress in your class colors for pep rallies during Spirit Week
Although this seems like an easy task, not everyone dresses up anymore. It is up to us to keep the spirit at FSHA alive. If your color is blue, WEAR BLUE. Even if it’s head to toe, go all out! - Be as loud as you can during chants
We don’t only want to hear chanting in the front, we want to hear it from everyone! Let’s hear from everybody in every row, not just the ones in the front. - Go show your support for Tologs in sports! Engage in matches and other sporting events.
Make signs, cheer and support your friends who engage in athletics. - Recognizing our athletes in class.
Not only should we appreciate the athletes who represent our school, we should congratulate them on their wins throughout the week. Watch morning announcements! If they call out an athlete, CHEER. - Be competitive! Try your best to get as many spirit points for your class.
Don’t be afraid to be as enthusiastic as you can be. Your class will only benefit from this. Be competitive! There is nothing wrong with some friendly competition.
Our spirit and enthusiasm on the Hill is something that we should not take for granted. Each and every one of us should do our part and participate in spirit events and represent our grade in the best way possible. All of us could use some improvement in this area, so let’s make this year the best of all!
